Jello is a fun addition to any table. I mainly serve it as a sweet side dish, but it can also be a dessert. Some of these jello dessert recipes are pretty fancy, but they’re all easy to make. Enjoy!
Jello Gelatin Flavors
What Jello flavors are there?
There are quite a few Jello flavors with special flavors being released often. I find our local Walmart store carries the most variety of Jello. Here are all the flavors of jello: Apricot, Berry Blue,Black Cherry,Blackberry,Blackberry Fusion,Cherry,Cherry Lemonade,Concord Grape,Cotton Candy, Fruit Punch, Grape,Green Apple,Lemon,Lemon-Lime,Lime,Mango,Margarita,Melon Fusion, Orange,Peach,Pineapple,Raspberry,Strawberry,Strawberry-Banana,Tropical Fusion, and Watermelon.
How many Jell-O gelatin flavors are there?
There are over 20 different flavors of Jello available! I find the most variety at my local Walmart store. Don’t discount other brands too; I recently found Jolly Rancher Jello in 2 flavors and my kids loved both!
What are the 4 original flavors of jello?
The 4 original flavors of Jello were Strawberry, Raspberry, Lemon and Orange. Strawberry continues to be the most popular flavor of Jello til this day!
Best Jello Fruit Combinations
What fruit can go in jello?
We love adding blueberries, strawberries, banana, mandarin oranges, diced pears, apples and peaches to jello.
What fruit can’t you put in jello?
Avoid adding pineapple, mango or kiwi to jello as it’s difficult to get jello to set when using these fruits.
Can you add fruit to jello right away?
You can add fruit to jello immediately, however it will likely sink to the bottom of whatever dish your jello is in.
How do you add fruit to jello?
Thoroughly whisk the jello mix with hot and cold water according to package directions. Place jello in the fridge and set a timer for 30 minutes. When the timer dings, add the fruit, cover and return to fridge to finish setting.
How long should jello set before adding fruit?
We recommend waiting 30-40 minutes for jello to partially set before adding fruit, so that the fruit sets in the middle of the jello, as opposed to all along the bottom.

Is jello a dessert or side dish?
Jello can be either a dessert or a side dish. Our family considers it a “sweet side dish” and we often serve it as a salad for Sunday dinner. It’s also popular on our holiday dinner tables.
What type of gelatin is in jello?
Gelatin in jello is animal collagen, namely from pigs. Check the organic section of your local grocery store to see if they carry any vegan jello options, if you prefer.
Classic Jello Recipes FAQs
Here are some answers to common questions we get about Jello:
How do you make jello layers?
Making Jello layers is much more simple than it seems, it just takes some time. You prepare your bottom layer first, by dissolving the package in boiling water, stirring in cold water, and putting it in the pan or container of your choosing. You refrigerate it until it’s almost set, usually about 45 minutes. Next you prepare your next layer the same way and gently spoon it over the first layer, then refrigerate for 45 minutes. You repeat until you have all the layers you desire.
Can Jello melt?
Yes, jello can melt. It loses it’s firmness slowly at room temperature and quickly on hot days. It melts completely at 95 degrees.
Where do you buy Jello?
You can usually buy Jello at your local grocery store, like Walmart, Kroger or Target. I am able to find the largest variety of jello at Walmart. Jello is almost always in the baking aisle. It commonly found around cookie mixes, cake mixes, and brownie mixes. You can also buy Jello online, if you’d prefer.
How long does it take for Jello to set?
Basic jello will set in about 3-4 hours. If you’re using jello for a salad or other type of recipe, it will likely set in 2-4 hours. Thin layers of jello set in about 2 hours.
Will jello set if you add too much water?
No, Jello will not set if you add too much water, so be sure to measure accurately using a liquid measuring cup, like the common glass measuring cups with handles.
Is Jello gluten free?
Jello does not contain any gluten in the ingredients, so it can be considered gluten-free. However, Jello, which is manufactured by Kraft, is not considered “Certified Gluten Free” meaning that it’s made in a facility that can contain trace amounts of gluten.
Why won’t my Jello set?
In order for jello to set, it has to be mixed according to package directions and then chilled. If your jello didn’t set, you likely added too much water, added fruit with too high of water content or are attempting to make it set in a location other than the refrigerator. You can attempt to fix jello by combining 1 cup boiling water with a small 3 oz box of jello in the same flavor. Whisk until jello is dissolved, then stir into your not-set jello recipe. Refrigerate until set. On the side of the box of Jello it gives fruit addition suggestions. I’ve found that I can use fruit even they don’t recommend if I simply decrease the water by 1/2 cup in my recipe.

- 1 box 5.1 oz instant vanilla pudding
- 32 oz. container vanilla yogurt
- 8 oz. container Cool Whip thawed
- 1 pkg. frozen raspberries (12 ounces)
Instructions
In a large bowl, combine the pudding mix and the vanilla yogurt, stirring until well mixed.
Fold Cool Whip into the mixture. (You can use a spatula or a whisk!)
Lastly, fold in the raspberries. I had set mine out for about 10 minutes before making the salad, but you can put them in frozen and they will thaw very quickly so you can serve the salad right after mixing. If you don’t serve the salad immediately, the raspberries will thaw more and the juices will add a raspberry flavor to the entire mixture – I like it both ways!

You just save part of the Jello mix to blend with your whipped topping, so you have pink strawberry whip to layer on top of the chilled Jello.
