Abstract

The military coup against the Spanish Republic started in Spanish North Africa (Morocco) on 17 July 1936 and a day later spread to the mainland of Spain in the form of provincial garrison revolts. ‘Rebellion, revolution, and repression’ examines the successes and failures of the events that started the Civil War. The uprising was unable to take over the country but was able to paralyse the Republican regime and prevent it from organizing a sold resistance. What triggered the acts of violence by ordinary people that followed the uprising? The aftermath of the conquest saw much violence, systematic brutality, torture, and mass public killings in villages across the rebel-held south.
