The Feast of St. Patrick is the pinnacle of pride for the Irish, a day when nationalist sensibilities are brought to the forefront. Mugs are filled with lager; tables are set with shepherd's pie, corn beef, and cabbage; and, perhaps most visible, everyone is decked out in green. All these attributes speak to the country's history and the local customs that were imported Stateside over the generations. But as with so many cultural and religious observances in America, St. Patrick’s Day has since gotten a commercialized spin—especially when it comes to the emblematic color.

Come March 17, get ready to step out your door into a virtual Emerald City, where pastries are topped with green icing and drinks are mixed with green food coloring. Even whole rivers are tinged with the striking hue (here’s looking at you, Chicago). Thankfully, all this kitsch lasts only one day. Wearing green proudly, however, need not.

The color—which is on the Irish flag and is representative of the shamrock, one of the nation’s symbols—can appear gimmicky on St. Patrick’s Day, with most taking the opportunity to dress like a leprechaun in a full-blown verdant ensemble. As fun as that sounds (and that’s putting it lightly), donning this costume works only for this specific occasion. Instead, why not opt for something a bit more, shall we say, evergreen?
