Copycat Lipton Onion Soup Mix Recipe (1)

Who doesn’t love Lipton Onion Soup Mix? Especially, during the holidays. It’s in every bowl of gravy, casserole, and the best dish of all – classic french onion dip. That stuff is like crack. However, this tiny packet of seasoning is also loaded with fillers, preservatives, and tons of sodium. So, no Bueno.

But, you can make your own homemade dry onion soup mix that’s much healthier. It’s perfect for adding flavor to veggie burgers, roasted red potatoes, and making that coveted onion dip that everyone loves. This is not just one more copycat recipe – it’s better! Don’t let your pantry be caught without it. Ready? Let’s make it!

Ingredients For Copycat Lipton Onion Soup Mix

Most Lipton onion soup mix recipes are not vegan because they use beef bouillon. But, not this one. All you have to do is whip up a batch of my Vegetable Bouillon Powder and you’re good to go. And, don’t leave it out. It’s the most important element of this recipe.

And, don’t sub the vegetable bouillon with a store-bought brand. They usually contain oil, fillers, and are high in sodium. Once you have the bouillon made you only need a few more ingredients. Here’s what you need.

  • Dried Onion Flakes
  • Vegetable Bouillon Powder
  • Onion Powder & Garlic Powder
  • Dried Parsely
  • Paprika (I like using smoked paprika because it adds another layer of flavor)
  • Celery Seed
  • Black Pepper

Salt is optional because it’s already in the vegetable bouillon. So, I would make the dry onion soup mix and then season with salt as needed.

What purpose does smoked paprika serve in this recipe, Shane? Lipton onion soup mix doesn’t taste smokey.

Can I use “Better than Bouillon” in place of the powdered? I feel like I could, but I don’t know what amount to use of the “Better than Bouillon.” I would make your recipe the same leaving out the powdered bouillon and use the “Better than Bouillon” directly into the recipe since it’s not a powder and cannot be mixed to keep on the shelf. Can you help with the amounts of the soup mix and then the “Better than Bouillon” I would use to equal one packet of Lipton Onion Soup mix?

    Thanks,
    Lori

I’m sure you could, Lori. But, I’m not sure what amount of the paste you would use. I’d start with 1 tsp.

Thank you so much Shane. You are very sweet and thoughtful. You answered my question without I’m asking “This recipe yields 4 packets of Lipton Onion Soup Mix.” Wish I could find your recipe earlier as I just bought 24pack of this because i live in sydney and have to order from USA. I still don’t have much idea about how to use those soup mix but I guess I can use your ideas 🙂 and since you you share this beautiful recipe I don’t think I need to buy from online anymore! Hope you could also share how to make another lipton beef flavor one please 😋 I’m so happy to found your website. May God bless you ❤️

How much salt do you usually use in your mixture? I’m not sure where to start with “salt to taste” as my guide…one tsp, maybe two?

HELP! Thanks so much for this Shane! So great to not have all that salt in the original! A question — the recipe says it makes the equivalent of 4 packets, which seems to be 1/4 cup per packet substitution. That would mean 1 cup total. I just mixed it, and it comes to just a bit over 1/2 cup – not 1 cup. I double checked all measurements, measuring cups & spoons, etc. It is barely over half of the expected amount. What did I do wrong?

Hi, Justina! I’ll go back and check to make sure my measurements are correct.

    Hello Shane,
This sounds like a great recipe to have on hand. How would you suggest trying to replicate the onion dip? A cashew base or tofu? Any recipe you could share? Also just a heads up that there is no link for the oil free dressing you mention in the post.
    Thank you!

You can use my cashew sour cream or tofu sour cream recipe. Then, add 1/4 cup of the seasoning and mix it together. Let it chill for about 20 minutes. Enjoy!

I’m so excited that you did this! For years I’ve been wanting to make a version of onion soup mix-apricot chicken. You may not have any idea what I’m referring to. It was popular during the sixties and seventies. Lipton onion soup, French dressing, and apricot jam. It became more than the sum of its parts—kind of tangy and delicious. Maybe I wouldn’t like it as much now—things were a lot more limited and basic back then, but just for nostalgia’s sake—and it’s easy and should still taste pretty good. Just have to decide whether to use baked tofu or tempeh or soy curls or mushrooms. Probably soy curls would be best. Many thanks.
